I finished this piece today. Attacked by a condor, this ideolog drops his peace necklace in the dust as he attempts to surrender. What happens when one throws away peace? I’ve added some detail photographs for reference.
Surrender: Peace and Deception, oil on canvas, 36″ x 36″, 2014
Hands fascinate me, I worked all day to find what looks good up close, as in the hand detail photo, is lacking in its visual impact when one steps back to view the entire picture. Drat…..keep working. (click to see close up detail)
Inspired by a book I’m ordering, “An Illustrated Book on Bad Arguments,” combined with the ALS ice bucket challenge video where California residents substitute dirt for ice water (because Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a drought emergency)…
I would like to offer that Californians quit electing Jerry Brown…. when he was governor in 1977, California experienced an “all-time” low snowpack… apparently voters failed to recognize that electing him again would result in a water shortage…duh!
24″ x 30″ acrylic on canvas, 2014. This piece is a statement about climate change and the study of glacial melting.
Seven days later…I think I’ve expressed the idea that I envisioned when I began this project…a narrative that shows, well, restraint or thoughtful determination in a tough situation–the juxtaposition of the act of smoking a cigarette against the closeness of gun to his hand–it smells of deception….I’ve titled it, “Patience is a Virtue.”
I’m painting this piece for entry into an exhibition by the same name, “Who Are You?” It’s going amazing well, for me anyway…I mean to say that I’m feeling comfortable that my technical skills are developing and permitting me to accurately reflect my vision.
Well, I begged and found a model…it does change the narrative a bit, don’t you think? I sketched this over and over again, then onto the canvas yesterday…at last today I started painting and managed to get a solid six hours in! I do have some major considerations to tackle….what color the background? It could easily be great in a Van Dyke brown, but then again something, that little voice in my head is repeating over and over….red. People like to look at red. I do have some time to decide…
Working lost…is the determination to conquer what I perceive as an “artist block” reflected in this sketch? Oh, crap! I so NEED a model for this. My husband refuses to pose for me (ref. to an earlier post including “Mystery solved.”) heh heh
